How should you plan your trip to Cadaqués?

White façades, waterside walks and the mark Dalí left behind. Two or three days is enough to explore Cadaqués, visit Portlligat and get a taste of the Cap de Creus landscape.

The character of Cadaqués

White outside. Mediterranean inside.

The bay, Portlligat and Cap de Creus each deserve their own moment. The town itself asks for time too.

BayDalíCap de Creus
The place before the list

White, blue and a long lunch looking out over the bay.

Cadaqués works best at walking pace. The waterfront helps you get your bearings; then the old town changes the rhythm with its cobbles, slopes and white façades. Portlligat brings in Dalí's legacy and Cap de Creus opens up the landscape. They are three separate chapters, and there is no need to squeeze them into one morning. With two nights you can see the town and add one well-chosen visit; with a third, the plan breathes and depends less on the time on a ticket.

Morning

Climb through the old town and come back down to the bay.

The pause

A long lunch looking over the town, with no other booking right after.

Afternoon

The same waterfront walk, in a completely different light.

01

The waterfront

Walk the bay and look for different views of the town. The same stroll feels very different in the morning and at the end of the day.

02

The old town

Wander the white, cobbled streets. Climb towards Santa Maria and drift back down to the water without sticking to a fixed route.

03

Portlligat

Head to the bay and, if you have booked, to the Salvador Dalí House-Museum. Plan the rest of the day around your entry time.

04

Cap de Creus

A landscape to walk with care, staying on the marked paths. On regulation days you cannot drive up to the lighthouse: check the Natural Park's calendar, the wind and any protection measures in force.

05

Santa Maria and the streets above

Climb from the bay through the old town and pause in the squares. If you want to go inside the church, check its opening hours; the walk through the streets is worth it on its own.

06

Cadaqués beaches and coves

Use the tourist office's beach guide to choose your access and route. Some coves mean walking over uneven ground: bring proper shoes and don't expect the services of a town beach.

Few stops. Good memories.

Your trip, day by day.

DAY 01

The town and the bay

Stroll through the centre, climb into the old town and give the afternoon to the waterfront.

DAY 02

Portlligat and Dalí

Build the day around your booked slot at the house-museum. Leave the rest for walking and a long, unhurried lunch.

DAY 03

The Cap de Creus landscape

Pick a route that suits your experience. Check the Natural Park's access calendar and the weather before deciding how to get there.

Another way to get to know a place

A getaway you can taste.

You don't need a list of twenty restaurants. You need to know what to look for, book a table if you want one, and give it time.

01

A seafood table

Look for fish cooking and ask about the dish of the day. If you pick a waterfront terrace, confirm your booking and ask what happens when the wind gets up.

02

Eat before you set out on foot

Sort out food and water before a coastal walk. Don't assume every cove will have somewhere to buy a snack or sit down for a meal.

03

Sobremesa in town

Book a lunch with nothing scheduled straight after. A place also gets to know you when you stay a little longer at the table (the sobremesa is that relaxed time after the meal).

Same destination. Different trip.

Cadaqués, with whoever you like.

As a couple

Start with a stroll round the bay and keep Portlligat for another morning. Leave the evening free to go back to your favourite streets.

With children

Keep walks on the cobbles short and check access if you have a pushchair. Don't make a long coastal route the only plan for the day.

If you like to walk

Check the rules and access for Cap de Creus, the wind and a route you can realistically finish. Getting back is part of the walk.

Getting there and where to stay.

The journey here

The road in is winding. Check bus times from Figueres and the parking situation before you go. The road to the Cap de Creus lighthouse is closed to cars and motorbikes on the Natural Park's regulation days (in 2026, every day in July and August): there is free parking at Corral d'en Morell and a shuttle.

Choose your base well

Stay in the old town if you want to walk to dinner. Check where you can park and how to get luggage to your door: some streets are narrow or steep.

Three ways to choose your base

Waterfront

To look out over the bay as you step out. Check for noise, luggage access and whether the advertised view is actually from your room.

Old town

To stay among the white streets. Check the slopes, the steps and the distance to parking if you arrive by car.

Around Portlligat

For a different feel from the centre. Check the walk in and the dinner options before choosing a place just because it is close to the house-museum.

Where to stay in Cadaqués

Once you have chosen your base, check availability, cancellation terms and prices for your dates on Booking.com. What you see there depends on the dates you search.

Book accommodation with parking if you need it: a car is of little use inside the town.

Good plans can change too

If the weather turns.

The Dalí House-Museum can be a fallback if you have a ticket, although the olive grove and the patios are outdoors. Round it off with a relaxed lunch in town and reshuffle the day if the wind picks up.

Two things that save you from a bad plan.

Turning up at Portlligat without checking tickets

The house-museum controls its own entry. Confirm the visit first, then build the day around that time.

Treating Cap de Creus as a quick stop

On regulation days (in 2026, every day in July and August, from 9:30 to 21:30, and several weekends in spring and autumn) you cannot go up to the lighthouse by car or motorbike: leave the car at Corral d'en Morell and take the shuttle, or walk. Check the year's calendar with the Cap de Creus Natural Park; with a level 4 fire alert, the park closes its access points.

Before you pack

What you're probably wondering.

How many days do I need in Cadaqués?+

Three days is enough for the town and bay, Portlligat with Dalí's house and a walk in Cap de Creus. With two you have to choose between Portlligat and Cap de Creus. One day is too short because of the winding road and the time it takes to park.

How do you get to Cadaqués?+

There is no train to the village. From Barcelona it is 170 km and about 2 h 15 min by car, on a road with a lot of bends in the last stretch. Without a car, the Moventis (Sarfa) bus runs from Figueres, about 33 km away, and from Girona; frequency drops out of season, so check the day's timetable at moventis.es.

When is the best time to visit Cadaqués?+

May, June and September. The AEMET (Spanish met office) data comes from Girona airport, 88 km away by road and further inland, so treat it as a guide rather than an exact reading (1981-2010). There, June has highs of 26.6 °C, 5 days of rain and 247 hours of sun; September, 26.1 °C, 6.5 days and 195 hours; May is cooler (22.4 °C) and a little rainier (7.3 days). July and August are hotter (highs of around 30 °C) and, in 2026, the road to the Cap de Creus lighthouse is closed to cars and motorbikes every day. The tramontana, the northerly wind, can change your plans in any season.

Do I need to book the Dalí house in Portlligat?+

Yes. Visiting the Salvador Dalí House-Museum requires booking in advance and is for a set time, so buy on the Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation website before you plan the rest of the day. The ticket is collected at the ticket office half an hour before; otherwise it is cancelled without a refund. From November to March the house is closed on Mondays, and at the start of the year there is a closure period (in 2026, from 7 January to 11 February): check the calendar on the Foundation's website.

What can I do in Cadaqués when it rains?+

The Dalí House-Museum can be a fallback if you have a ticket, although the olive grove and the patios are outdoors. Round it off with a relaxed lunch in town and reshuffle the day if the wind picks up.

Which area should I stay in when visiting Cadaqués?+

Waterfront: To look out over the bay as you step out. Check for noise, luggage access and whether the advertised view is actually from your room. Old town: To stay among the white streets. Check the slopes, the steps and the distance to parking if you arrive by car. Around Portlligat: For a different feel from the centre. Check the walk in and the dinner options before choosing a place just because it is close to the house-museum.

What should I see in Cadaqués on a first visit?+

Start with The waterfront, The old town, Portlligat. Our 3-day plan organises these stops with time to wander. See the full route and fit the visits around your arrival times.
