Canary Islands, at your own pace.

The Canary Islands work for a four- to six-day getaway with volcanoes, coastline and good weather almost all year. Each island calls for a different plan: Lanzarote and Fuerteventura for lava fields and dunes, Tenerife for Mount Teide and La Palma for hiking.

How to approach this getaway

Lava tastes like a holiday too.

Each island calls for a different plan. Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are best organised by area, with volcanic landscapes and beaches; Tenerife packs plenty of variety into a small space and La Palma is an island of trails. Four or five days give one island the time it deserves.

01

Lanzarote, area by area

Playa Blanca and the Papagayo coves shape a beach day; Timanfaya and La Geria, another. Check access and the day's conditions.

02

Fuerteventura and Tenerife

Fuerteventura means long beaches and wind; Tenerife means climbing Mount Teide and moving between north and south. The weather changes a lot from one area to the next.

03

La Palma, on foot

Trails and dark skies. Book a car and check trail conditions before setting off.

Before you pack

What you're probably wondering.

How many days do you need for the Canary Islands?+

Four or five days if you're visiting one island. Getting there and back takes up almost a day, so a short weekend isn't worth it. Better to choose one island than to split your days between two.

Which Canary Island should I choose for a first trip?+

Lanzarote if you want volcanic scenery without much walking, Fuerteventura for long beaches and wind, Tenerife for climbing Mount Teide and plenty of variety in a small area, and La Palma for hiking and dark skies. On all four, it's worth hiring a car.

When is the best time to visit the Canary Islands?+

You can go all year round because temperatures barely change. The trade winds blow hard in summer on Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, and in winter it can rain in the north of Tenerife and La Palma. Book flights and car hire early for Easter and summer.
