Catalonia works for two- to three-day getaways with coast, villages and culture, all within a few hours of Barcelona. Cadaqués combines a bay, an old town and the landscape of Cap de Creus in a long weekend.
Our Catalonia guide starts in Cadaqués. The bay, the old town, Portlligat and Cap de Creus are separate chapters of a getaway that's better with two or three nights.
Walk around the bay and the streets of the old town. Check how to arrive with luggage and where to leave the car.
Check your visit to Dalí's house-museum and build the day around that time slot.
Check access restrictions, your route and the wind. Don't tack it on as an automatic stop on the way home.
The Mediterranean, in small print.
Three days give you the village, Portlligat with Dalí's house and a walk around Cap de Creus. With two, you'll have to choose between the last two. Cadaqués is 170 km from Barcelona, about 2 hr 15 min by car.
April to June, plus September and October. In high summer it's busier and parking is hard, and the tramontana wind can blow hard in any season. In July, Girona airport records highs of around 30 °C.
Yes: accommodation, and a timed ticket if you want to see the Salvador Dalí House-Museum in Portlligat. Cadaqués has no train and the access road is winding, so it's best to arrive with your accommodation sorted, and with parking if you're driving.
Choose who you're travelling with, when and for how many days. The planner suggests places.
