How to approach this getaway

Stone, local produce and evenings for walking.

Cáceres, Mérida, Trujillo and Plasencia are close to one another and combine well on a road trip. Two or three days let you get to know one or two cities without rushing; there's no need to turn the weekend into a tour of the whole region.

01

Cáceres, on foot

Use the Plaza Mayor as your reference point and take a short route between the squares of the old town. Repeat part of it at nightfall.

02

Mérida and Trujillo

Mérida keeps its Roman legacy and Trujillo is a town of squares. Each deserves a day, ideally from a single base.

03

The heat changes the timetable

In the warmer months, do your walking first thing and late in the day, and check which indoor sights open at midday.

When is the best time to visit Extremadura?+

Is it worth combining several places in one trip?+

Yes, because distances are short and the cities are very different from one another: Cáceres is a monumental city, Mérida keeps its Roman legacy, Trujillo is a town of squares and Plasencia pairs a cathedral with the surrounding countryside. What you should avoid is sleeping somewhere different every night.
