How should you plan your trip to Cudillero?

Colourful houses stacked above a fishing harbour. You can see Cudillero in a day, but two let you add the coast and sit down to lunch without watching the clock.

The character of Cudillero

Colour, slopes and a table by the harbour.

Start down at the water, wander the streets at your own pace and save another moment for the coast.

The place before the list

Coloured houses, salty air and fish on the table.

The harbour is the beginning, but Cudillero makes sense when you climb. The streets bend, the façades change colour and the water reappears between the rooftops. Give one day to that small scale and another to the municipality's coast: going from the town's amphitheatre of houses to the open horizon of Cabo Vidio changes the whole trip. Playa del Silencio adds scenery, though its stepped access and pebbly shore do not suit every traveller.

The view

Climb through the village and watch the harbour appear between the rooftops.

The pause

Ask about the fish of the day and stretch out the meal.

The horizon

Give another day to the coast without piling up stops.

01

The harbour

The first stop for understanding the village: boats, coloured façades and streets that climb the hillside.

02

Streets and viewpoints

Climb slowly up the steps of the village. The walk has steep sections; adapt the route to your mobility.

03

The Cudillero coast

Give another day to the coastline of the municipality. Check access and the state of the sea before heading down to the beaches.

04

The Asturian table

Leave room for a proper meal. Ask about the fish of the day and seasonal produce.

05

Cabo Vidio

Head to the area around Oviñana to see the coast from above. Stay on the marked paths and change plan if the wind makes walking unsafe.

06

Playa del Silencio (Gavieiro)

A pebble cove at Castañeras, reached on foot by a walk of about 500 m with numerous steps. Bring what you need and take everything away with you. It is a stop to enjoy the scenery, not a town beach with full services.

Few stops. Good memories.

Your trip, day by day.

DAY 01

Harbour, slopes and a long lunch

Walk the harbour, climb through the village and stop for lunch. Return to the viewpoints when the light changes.

DAY 02

A day on the Cantabrian coast

Explore the nearby coastline by car. Pick a few stops and check the tides if your walk depends on them.

A suggested editorial route. Adjust the timings to your bookings, the weather and your mobility.

Another way to get to know a place

A getaway you can taste.

You don't need a list of twenty restaurants. You need to know what to look for, book a table if you want one, and give it time.

01

Fish from the village (the 'pixueta' kitchen)

Ask about the catch and how it is prepared that day. Pixín is the Asturian name for monkfish: spotting it on a menu already brings you a little closer to the place.

02

Curadillo

Cudillero Tourism describes curadillo as fish, usually small sharks, air-dried, and as the village's most typical dish, closely tied to the vigilia (the traditional meatless fast days). Ask whether they make it and in which recipe; don't assume it will always be on the menu.

03

A long lunch by the harbour

Choose the restaurant for its cooking and its booking terms. The terrace can be very tempting, but have a fallback in case rain or wind arrives.

Same destination. Different trip.

Cudillero, with whoever you like.

As a couple

Combine a morning in the village with an afternoon on the coast. Don't fill both days with viewpoints: leave room for an unhurried meal.

With a dog

On Playa del Silencio (Gavieiro), animals are banned from access and presence from 1 June to 30 September, according to Turismo Asturias. Outside those dates, on the promenades and urban areas next to the access points, dogs must be on a fixed lead of no more than one metre. There are steps and slopes.

With children

Prioritise short routes around the harbour. The slopes and the steps down to some beaches may call for a baby carrier, or a different stop.

Getting there and where to stay.

The journey here

A car makes it easy to combine the village with the coast. The town council regulates parking at the harbour (tax ordinance, BOPA 2024): check the current zones and conditions at cudillero.es and leave the car in an authorised car park.

Choose your base well

Sleeping near the harbour lets you enjoy the village at the end of the day. Places in the surrounding countryside suit you if you want peace and have a car.

Three ways to choose your base

By the harbour

To walk down for a meal and back again. Check whether your accommodation involves steps or steep streets.

Upper village

It can make arriving by car easier, but you will have to deal with the climb to and from the harbour.

Villages of the municipality

They suit you if you want a countryside stay and to travel along the coast. Check where to eat so you don't have to drive every night.

The harbour is best seen on foot. Park in the designated areas and bring a waterproof.

Good plans can change too

If the weather turns.

Limit outdoor walking to the windows of good weather and make lunch the centrepiece of the day. If it rains steadily, ask the tourist office about cultural activities open in the municipality; don't push on to the viewpoints or down to a cove.

Two things that save you from a bad plan.

Confusing close with easy

Playa del Silencio involves a walk and steps. Think about the climb back before you start going down.

Arriving at the harbour without checking parking

The town council regulates parking at the harbour. Check the current zones and conditions at cudillero.es and walk through the village.
