The character of Llanes

A harbour, lots of green and another beach to discover.

Get to know the town on foot and choose one or two of the municipality's beaches for each coast day.

TownCoastWalks
The place before the list

Walks above the Cantabrian Sea and green right down to the shore.

Llanes lets you change scenery without giving up a comfortable base. One day for the town, the harbour and the Paseo de San Pedro; another to choose a beach and walk at an easy pace; a third for the countryside. Not every beach offers the same experience: a town beach and a natural cove need different preparation. Decide by access, the state of the sea and who is travelling with you. In town, the Cubos de la Memoria add colour to the stroll without turning it into another excursion.

01

The historic centre

Walk the town's streets and squares. The architecture gives you reasons to stretch the walk out without filling your diary.

02

Paseo de San Pedro

A clifftop route with views over the Cantabrian Sea. Wear suitable shoes and adapt the walk to the weather.

03

The harbour

Follow the water and head back to the centre for lunch. It is a good way to link the town walk with the shoreline.

04

The municipality's beaches

Choose according to the state of the sea, access and who you're with. With a dog, remember that during the bathing season you cannot go onto the beaches.

05

Los Cubos de la Memoria

Agustín Ibarrola's intervention transforms the breakwater blocks in the harbour. See them from the designated areas; there is no need to climb on the work to appreciate it.

06

Torimbia

A natural beach reached by car from Niembro along a paved road up to a mountain saddle (collada) and, from there, on foot along a path. It has been popular since the 1960s for nudism; bear in mind that it is not a town beach.

Few stops. Good memories.

Your trip, day by day.

DAY 01

The town by the sea

Historic centre, harbour and Paseo de San Pedro. End the day in the centre without going back to the car.

DAY 02

A day on the coast

Pick one or two beaches and leave time to walk. Have a plan B in case the Cantabrian Sea changes its mood.

DAY 03

The countryside

Round off the getaway with a walk through the municipality and an unhurried lunch. Avoid adding unnecessary travel.

Another way to get to know a place

A getaway you can taste.

You don't need a list of twenty restaurants. You need to know what to look for, book a table if you want one, and give it time.

01

A cider house

The sobremesa (the unhurried time at the table after eating) is part of the getaway. Choose the place for its cooking, ask about portion sizes and avoid ordering too many dishes before you know how big they are.

02

Fish and seasonal produce

Ask what comes from nearby and how it is cooked. The coast gives context, but menus and availability change.

03

A plan for a grey day

Book an indoor lunch and organise your walks around the forecast. Having a table sorted makes the day with children simpler.

Same destination. Different trip.

Llanes, with whoever you like.

With children

Choose the beach for its access and that day's conditions. Add breaks between the historic centre, the harbour and the Paseo de San Pedro.

With a dog

The municipal beach ordinance bans pets from entering or being on the beaches during the bathing season, which is set each year with the Principality's lifeguard plan. Only guide dogs and working or rescue dogs are exempt. Check this year's dates with Llanes town council before planning the day.

As a couple

A coastal morning and an afternoon in town are enough to change scenery. Leave room for dinner and a walk back to the harbour afterwards.

Choose your base well

The centre lets you walk to the harbour and the historic quarter. If you prefer a country house, check the distance to services and whether you'll need a car.

Three ways to choose your base

The town

To cover the centre, harbour and Paseo de San Pedro without moving the car. Check parking before you arrive.

Near a beach

A good idea if that beach will be the centre of your trip. Confirm the real walking route and not just the straight-line distance.

Country house in the municipality

To combine coast and countryside. Check how to reach shops and restaurants and whether you will need a car for everything.

Where to stay in Llanes

With a dog, don't count on the beaches during the bathing season: Llanes's ordinance bans pets from them during those months.

Good plans can change too

If the weather turns.

Shorten the walk and look at the cultural venues of the municipality, such as the Museo Etnográfico del Oriente de Asturias. Confirm opening (it is closed on Mondays) and travel before you set out. The Paseo de San Pedro can wait for another weather window.

Two things that save you from a bad plan.

Visiting five beaches in one afternoon

Choose one or two. Parking, walking down and coming back are part of the day; stacking up stops leaves little time by the sea.

Assuming there are dog beaches in summer

In Llanes the ordinance bans pets from the beaches during the bathing season. Check this year's dates with the town council before planning a beach day with your dog.

Before you pack

What you're probably wondering.

How many days do I need in Llanes?+

Two days covers the town and one day on the coast. With three you add the countryside of the municipality without rushing. If you only have a weekend, split it: historic centre and harbour one day, beaches and the Paseo de San Pedro the other.

When is the best time to visit Llanes?+

From June to September. The AEMET (Spanish met office) data comes from Santander Airport, about 90 km away by road and in another autonomous community, so treat it as a guide rather than an exact reading. There, from June to September it rains 7 to 9 days a month, and July and August have highs of around 24 °C. May and October are possible, but they already get 10 or 11 rainy days and October has around 130 hours of sun. In January it rains around 12 days and you get roughly 85 hours of sun, against 160 to 187 from June to September (1981-2010).

How do you get to Llanes from Madrid?+

By car it is 446 km and about 5 h 25 min. From Bilbao it is 180 km (2 h 10 min) and from Oviedo 108 km (1 h 20 min). Without a car, Llanes is on the narrow-gauge railway line between Oviedo and Santander, but check Renfe timetables before you decide, and bear in mind that the beaches of the municipality need a car or taxi.

Can you take a dog to the beaches in Llanes?+

Not during the bathing season. Llanes town council's beach ordinance (BOPA of 19 July 2018, article 16) bans pets from entering or being on the beaches, except guide dogs and working or rescue dogs. The season is set each year with the Principality's lifeguard plan: confirm the dates with the town council. Outside those dates, the ordinance does not expressly ban their presence on the sand, but ask before you go.

What should I book before travelling to Llanes?+
