How should you plan your trip to Vejer de la Frontera?
Vejer sits on a hill about 190 metres above sea level, with walls, arches and steep streets. One day is enough for the old town; the second, for the beaches of El Palmar and Caños de Meca.
- Suggested time
- 2 days
- To go at your own pace
- May and October
The NMAC Foundation, on the Montenmedio estate, offers James Turrell's light sequence: €30 per person (minimum 4 people or the equivalent price), about 40 minutes, on Saturdays and Sundays at dusk. It is not suitable for children and requires booking at least 48 hours ahead (956 455 134). In August, the Velada de la Virgen de la Oliva (10th to 24th) fills the village, and within it the Noche Flamenca, on the Segur walls; Vejer Tourism does not publish its date, so check it before booking accommodation.

Whitewash, walls and the sea twenty minutes away.
A hill village for a full day, and a second day on the beach at El Palmar or Caños de Meca.
Whitewash, walls and Atlantic beaches twenty minutes away.
Vejer is best understood on foot and slowly. The old town fits into one long morning, but the best bits are the corners: patios, arches, viewpoints and bars with tables out on the street. On the second day the scenery changes with the beaches of El Palmar and Caños de Meca, and with the cliffs and pine forest of the natural park. In July and August the village and the beaches are at their busiest (hotel occupancy of 78% and 83% in the Costa de la Luz area of Cádiz, INE 2025); in May and October occupancy is medium.
A walk along the walls before the old town fills up.
Seafood rice or pescaíto frito with the sea in front of you.
From here you can see the mouth of the Barbate, the Zahara coast and the La Breña marshes. Vejer Tourism now lists it as temporarily closed, and it is a residential house: do not go in without permission.

Walls and arches
The walled enclosure dates from the 15th century and surrounds a little over 4 hectares. Four gates survive: Arco de la Segur, Arco de la Villa, Arco de Sancho IV and Arco de Puerta Cerrada. Enter by the Arco de Santa Catalina and walk through the Judería (old Jewish quarter).
Castle
Dating from the 10th and 11th centuries, on an earlier base. It has two courtyards, a cistern, a horseshoe-arched gate with alfiz and battlements with views over the whole village. It was the residence of the Dukes of Medina Sidonia in the 14th century. Vejer Tourism gives its visiting hours as Saturdays and Sundays 11:00 to 14:00, but another version of its website lists it as temporarily closed: confirm first with the Delegación de Cultura (956 450 800). The tourist office is open Monday to Saturday 10:00 to 14:00 and 16:30 to 18:30, and on Sundays 10:00 to 14:00.
Church of the Divino Salvador
In the upper part. The chancel is 14th-century Gothic-Mudéjar and the extension is late Gothic, from the late 15th and early 16th centuries. The main altarpiece is 17th-century. It has no fixed visiting hours: ask the parish by phone (660 650 066).
Palacio de Tamarón and Museo de Costumbres
The Palace of the Marqués de Tamarón, next to the Arco de la Segur, houses the Museum of History and Archaeology: 13 rooms, entry €2 (free for under-12s and pensioners). Open Tuesday to Sunday 10:30 to 14:00 and 17:00 to 20:00. The Municipal Museum of Customs and Traditions (€1) is in the Concepcionistas convent, beside the Arco de las Monjas, and is closed on Mondays and Sundays.
El Palmar beach
Between 9 and 12 km from the village, according to Vejer Tourism, on the Costa de la Luz. Fine sand, open Atlantic water and swell that draws surfers all year. In summer it has lifeguards and services. The beach restaurants serve seafood rice dishes and pescaíto frito (fried fish).
Caños de Meca and Cabo Trafalgar
They belong to Barbate and are about 17 km from Vejer, within the La Breña y Marismas del Barbate Natural Park. The Torre del Tajo trail starts at a parking area at km 19.5 of the A-2233, heading towards Los Caños. The tower is not open permanently: before you go, contact the park's information point (956 45 97 80). The lighthouse road ends at the Trafalgar tombolo. Zahara de los Atunes is about 22 km away.

A getaway you can taste.
You don't need a list of twenty restaurants. You need to know what to look for, book a table if you want one, and give it time.
Retinto beef and Janda veal
Beef from the local retinto breed and the surrounding district, and pork products made in the village butchers, such as lomo de manteca, morcillas and chorizos.
Fish and rice dishes at El Palmar
Pescaíto frito and seafood rice a few metres from the sea. The natural lunch for a beach day.
Vejer pastries
Camiones, tortas vejeriegas and, at Lent, pan duro and roscos. Also cinnamon and lemon rosquitos and minipestiños.
Vejer de la Frontera, with whoever you like.
As a couple
Dinner in the old town, a walk along the walls at sunset and a morning at El Palmar. With two nights you don't need more.
With children
The slopes and cobbles tire little ones. Alternate a stretch of the old town with an afternoon on the beach at El Palmar.
If you're after the sea
El Palmar has open swell, ideal for surfing. Caños de Meca offers cliffs and pine forest for walking.

Getting there and where to stay.
The journey here
Vejer has no train. There are regular buses from Cádiz (the Comes company covers the area), but the beaches are between 9 and 22 km from the village, so a car makes the second day much simpler. From Cádiz it is 59 km (50 min) and from Seville 164 km (1 h 55 min).
| From | Distance | Driving time |
|---|---|---|
| Madrid | 693 km | 7 h 40 min |
| Sevilla | 164 km | 1 h 55 min |
| Málaga | 210 km | 2 h 45 min |
| Cádiz | 59 km | 50 min |
Choose your base well
Sleep in the old town if you want to stroll the walls at dusk, knowing there are slopes and narrow streets. In the new part (Los Remedios) parking is easier. El Palmar and Caños de Meca work if you want the beach on foot.
Three ways to choose your base
Old town
For dinner and walks among the walls. Slopes and alleys, and little room for the car.
Los Remedios
The new area at the foot of the old town, with parking and services.
El Palmar or Caños de Meca
If the beach and the coastal light are your priority. Count on using the car to come up to the village for dinner.

Park in Los Remedios or on Calle Corredera, which the town council lists as public car parks, and walk up. Inside the walls the streets are narrow and sloping.
If the weather turns.
In poor weather, head into the Palacio de Tamarón (13 rooms, €2) and the Museum of Customs and Traditions. If the sky clears, climb the walls. Leave the beaches for another day: the levante, the prevailing wind in the area, can spoil the outing.
Two things that save you from a bad plan.
Driving up into the old town
The streets are narrow and sloping. Park in Los Remedios or La Corredera and walk up.
Going to the beach without checking the wind
According to the town's website, the levante is the prevailing wind in the area, followed by the poniente. Check the forecast before choosing a beach.
