How should you plan your trip to Doñana and Mazagón?

The interior of the Doñana marshes can only be seen on an authorised guided visit, by 4x4 or by boat. The visitor centres, their trails and the beach are open to all. Mazagón is a good base with a beach, about 30 km from Matalascañas.

Marsh, pine forest and dunes all the way to the sea.

Doñana isn't visited like an ordinary park. Most of the marsh is closed to free access and is seen on one of the three official guided routes: two by 4x4 and one by boat. Everything else is open to all: the visitor centres with their trails, the beach and the cattle tracks that leave from El Rocío. Mazagón works as a base and leaves the beach for your free moments. MITECO recommends the autumn and winter season for visiting the park, because there are fewer visitors and temperatures are usually very pleasant; if you want to add the beach, April, May and October work better.

01

El Acebuche Visitor Centre

About 3 km from Matalascañas along the A-483, plus 2 km of track. It has an exhibition, an audiovisual room, a café, the Laguna del Acebuche trail, the Lagunas del Huerto y las Pajas trail and an Iberian lynx observatory. It is also the booking point for the 4x4. Open 8:00 to 15:00 and 16:00 to 19:00 from 16 September to 31 March; in April, 8:00 to 15:00 and 16:00 to 20:00; from May to 15 September, 8:00 to 15:00 and 16:00 to 21:00, and on Sundays from 15 June to 15 September only 8:00 to 15:00. Closed on 1, 5 and 6 January, 24, 25 and 31 December and during the Romería del Rocío.

02

Southern 4x4 route: Acebuche-La Plancha

One of the park's three official guided routes. It lasts about 4 hours and covers around 70 km in an off-road vehicle with a guide-driver, through the park's most characteristic ecosystems. It is run by the Marismas del Rocío cooperative under concession. There are morning and afternoon departures, with one rest day a week.

03

The Real Fernando boat from Sanlúcar

The river route leaves from Bajo de Guía, in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, and goes up the Guadalquivir towards La Plancha: about 13 km out and 13 back, around 4 hours. Booking is compulsory. Sanlúcar is a long way from Mazagón (228 km by road), so it makes sense if you are sleeping in the province of Cádiz.

04

La Rocina, El Rocío and Palacio del Acebrón

The La Rocina visitor centre is a kilometre from the village of El Rocío, and you walk there from the village. It has the Charco de la Boca trail. The Palacio del Acebrón is about 6 km from La Rocina along a paved track, with its Charco del Acebrón trail. The centre's information sheet allows going on foot, by bike or by car, but the park's access guide lists it as reachable only by private vehicle: confirm before you go.

05

Asperillo beach and cliff

You can walk freely along the 33 km of National Park beach between Sanlúcar and Matalascañas. El Asperillo is a cliff of fossil dunes up to 30 m high. A wooden walkway of about 1.3 km (30 minutes) starts from the A-494 at kilometre point 40.2, on the left going from Matalascañas towards Mazagón. It is accessible as far as the Cuesta Maneli viewpoint; the way down to the beach is by steps and is not adapted. There is no shade, no permit is needed and parking is paid in summer. It has been closed temporarily at times, so check at El Acebuche that it is open.

06

Mazagón and around

Mazagón beach is long and borders the natural park. About 14 km away is the Monasterio de La Rábida, in Palos de la Frontera, and Huelva city is 21 km away.

Another way to get to know a place

A getaway you can taste.

You don't need a list of twenty restaurants. You need to know what to look for, book a table if you want one, and give it time.

01

Huelva white prawns

Order them boiled or grilled at a bar in Mazagón.

02

Chocos (cuttlefish)

Fried choco or with broad beans on menus along the Huelva coast.

03

Huelva strawberries

The season is concentrated in spring. They are sold at stalls and markets in the area.

Same destination. Different trip.

Doñana and Mazagón, with whoever you like.

With children

The trails at the visitor centres are pedestrian and run on wooden walkways. The 4x4 lasts about 4 hours; consider whether they will last.

If you want beach time

Mazagón and Asperillo beach let you combine nature and sea on the same day.

For bird photography

The park recommends autumn and winter for a visit, with fewer visitors. Bring binoculars: for seeing wildlife they are almost essential.

Getting there and where to stay.

The journey here

The practical option is a car: the MITECO access guide lists the El Acebuche and Palacio del Acebrón visitor centres as reachable only by private vehicle. Buses reach El Rocío, and from there you can walk to the La Rocina visitor centre. Mazagón is 21 km from Huelva and 114 km from Seville (1 h 25 min).

Choose your base well

Mazagón is the most convenient base if you want a beach, with Matalascañas 30 km away and El Acebuche about 3 km further on. If you'd rather be next to the park, Matalascañas and El Rocío are closer to the visitor centres.

Three ways to choose your base

Mazagón

A long beach and services; 30 km from Matalascañas and 21 from Huelva.

Matalascañas

Closer to El Acebuche (about 3 km) and to the park's coast.

El Rocío

To be next to the La Rocina visitor centre and the cattle tracks.

Bring binoculars: the park itself says they are almost essential for seeing wildlife. And book the 4x4 before you pay for accommodation, because places are limited.

Good plans can change too

If the weather turns.

In the rain, the visitor centres (El Acebuche, La Rocina) have an exhibition and an audiovisual room. Book the 4x4 with a margin of days and ask the cooperative whether there are changes because of the weather.

Two things that save you from a bad plan.

Going to El Acebuche without a 4x4 booking

Places are limited. Book by phone or on the cooperative's website before you arrive.

Thinking the park can be explored in your own car

The tracks inside are covered by the authorised companies. By car you reach the visitor centres.
