How should you plan your trip to Plasencia?

A walled city of a comfortable size that works as a base for two very different outings: the Jerte Valley, which blooms in late March, and Monfragüe National Park, about 35 km away. Two or three days cover the city plus one excursion.

The character of Plasencia

Between two cathedrals and a valley in bloom.

Plasencia is a base: one day for the city, another for Monfragüe and, in March or April, another for the Jerte Valley.

MonfragüeCherry blossomCathedrals
The place before the list

Stone, walls and open country half an hour away in any direction.

Plasencia is not a destination of scattered monuments but a base. The city has its two cathedrals, its walls and a quiet centre, but what makes it useful is geography: the Jerte Valley about 30 km away and Monfragüe about 35. If you come in March or April, the Jerte takes priority: the blossom lasts about two weeks and you need to go with the date in hand. Guided birdwatching departures in Monfragüe run from March to June and in October. On the first Tuesday in August, Plaza Mayor fills up for the Martes Mayor, which comes from the old weekly market.

01

Plaza Mayor

The starting point for the old town. From here you can walk to both cathedrals and the medieval streets. On the first Tuesday of August it fills with stalls for the Martes Mayor, which comes from the city's old weekly market.

02

Old Cathedral and New Cathedral

Two cathedrals side by side. The old one is Romanesque with Gothic touches; the new one, from Gothic to Renaissance, was begun in 1498 and left unfinished: the naves of the main body were never built. Closed on Mondays, and the hours change by day (Saturdays 10:30 to 19:00 and Sundays 10:30 to 16:00). General admission costs €10. Check the current hours at catedralesplasencia.com.

03

City walls and Torre Lucía

The city keeps a good part of its wall. Torre Lucía has a free interpretation centre on the medieval city and a stretch of wall walk.

04

Palacio de Mirabel

One of the palaces in the old town. Visits are booked by phone (927 41 07 01) and cost €4 per person; without a booking you can ring the bell at the main door, but there is no guarantee a visit will be available.

05

Monfragüe National Park

18,396 hectares along the Tagus, about 35 km from Plasencia. You can see vultures, black storks and Spanish imperial eagles; the visitor centre is at Villarreal de San Carlos.

06

Jerte Valley

About 30 km along the N-110. In late March and early April it fills with cherry blossom; outside those dates it is a mountain road lined with villages.

Few stops. Good memories.

Your trip, day by day.

DAY 01

Plaza Mayor, cathedrals and walls

Start in Plaza Mayor, give yourself time inside both cathedrals and climb onto the wall. In the afternoon, Torre Lucía and dinner in the old town.

DAY 02

Monfragüe

Spend the day in the park: the visitor centre at Villarreal de San Carlos, viewpoints such as the Salto del Gitano and, if you have the legs for it, the red route to the Castle (16 km, medium difficulty).

DAY 03

Jerte Valley

In blossom season, drive the N-110 (about 30 km between Navaconcejo and the Puerto de Tornavacas) or the circular mountain route of about 50 km. Better on a weekday, with less traffic.

A suggested editorial route. Adjust the timings to your bookings, the weather and your mobility.

Another way to get to know a place

A getaway you can taste.

You don't need a list of twenty restaurants. You need to know what to look for, book a table if you want one, and give it time.

01

Jerte cherries

The valley's signature product. Ask in shops and bars what is available that week, because it depends on the season.

02

Pimentón (paprika)

La Vera paprika has its museum in Jaraíz de la Vera, in the La Vera district. Buy a tin and ask which variety it is.

03

Dehesa cooking

Migas, Iberian ham and torta del Casar are the staples on menus. Pair a long lunch with a short afternoon of sightseeing.

Same destination. Different trip.

Plasencia, with whoever you like.

With children

Monfragüe works well with kids if you pick a short route and bring binoculars. In town, alternate the cathedral with the park so they don't get tired.

On a tight budget

Walking round Plasencia, the Jerte and the Monfragüe viewpoints costs nothing. The cathedrals and the museum are the only paid sights.

With a camera

The valley in bloom, vultures over the Salto del Gitano and the cathedrals from the square.

Getting there and where to stay.

The journey here

From Madrid it is 254 km (2 h 55 min) by road; from Salamanca, 130 km along the Vía de la Plata. Renfe runs trains to Plasencia from Madrid and Cáceres: check timetables. For Monfragüe a car gives you more room: there is a park bus between Plasencia and Villarreal de San Carlos, but it only runs Monday to Friday. For the Jerte Valley, a car is the most convenient.

Choose your base well

The old town lets you stroll at night without a car. The Parador occupies a former Dominican convent. If you are coming for the cherry blossom, also look at accommodation in the valley villages.

Three ways to choose your base

Old town

To see the cathedrals and Plaza Mayor on foot and have dinner without a car. Ask about parking if you arrive with luggage.

Parador (former Dominican convent)

To stay inside the old town. Check availability early if you are going at a weekend.

Jerte Valley villages

To live the blossom from the inside. Allow for a longer trip back to Plasencia and to Monfragüe.

Where to stay in Plasencia

For the cherry blossom, check the Jerte Valley website a few days beforehand: the date changes every year (in 2026 it ran roughly from 20 March to 3 April) and starts in the lower parts of the valley.

Good plans can change too

If the weather turns.

Spend the day at the two cathedrals and their museum (check the hours at catedralesplasencia.com) and leave the park and the valley for another day. In the rain the Monfragüe and Jerte routes lose a lot: better to wait for it to clear.

Two things that save you from a bad plan.

Going for the blossom without checking the date

The bloom changes every year and lasts about two weeks. Check the Jerte Valley website a few days before you set off.

Going to Monfragüe at a weekend without a car

The bus that reaches Villarreal de San Carlos only runs Monday to Friday. If you travel at the weekend, you need a car.
