How should you plan your trip to Cáceres?

Stone, squares and a historic city to explore on foot. Cáceres works in two days: one to get your bearings and one to step inside its cultural spaces and enjoy the table.

The Palacio de los Golfines de Abajo can only be visited with a guide and a booked appointment (phone 927 21 80 51 or email). For other interiors, check the current opening hours. If you choose a guided visit, confirm the language, meeting point and conditions before booking.

The character of Cáceres

Stone has its blue hour too.

Cover the monumental centre with few stops and return to its squares when the light changes.

The place before the list

Golden stone, lived-in squares and the taste of Extremadura.

Cáceres asks you to go back to the same streets at a different hour. The Ciudad Monumental changes between morning and dusk, and two days let you do more than just walk past the buildings. Use Plaza Mayor as a reference point, walk the squares of Santa María, San Jorge and San Mateo and choose the interiors that interest you. In between, a meal of Extremaduran produce and a long pause. If you travel in the heat, don't fight it: reorganise your walk and leave the outdoors for the kinder hours.

Morning

A first walk through the squares of the historic enclosure.

The pause

Extremaduran produce and a little longer at the table.

Afternoon

Go back to a street you know to see it in a different light.

01

Plaza Mayor

A practical place to start and get your bearings. From here you can enter the historic enclosure and plan your walk on foot.

02

Ciudad Monumental

Walk the stone squares and streets at leisure. Come back at dusk to see a different light.

03

Plaza de Santa María

A stop to take in the architecture and choose which interiors to visit. Check current opening hours.

04

Local food

Book a long lunch to get to know Extremaduran produce. Ask about seasonal specialities.

05

Plaza de San Jorge

Work it into your walk between the squares of the monumental enclosure. Look at the architecture from different heights without making every flight of steps a duty.

06

Around San Mateo and Las Veletas

An area to complete the historic route. The Palacio de las Veletas and its cistern, home of the Museo de Cáceres, are temporarily closed for works: the Junta expects to finish the whole project in the first quarter of 2027, barring setbacks. In the meantime you can visit the Casa de los Caballos, part of the same museum, with free entry.

Few stops. Good memories.

Your trip, day by day.

DAY 01

A first walk through history

Plaza Mayor and a stroll round the monumental enclosure. Save the last light to retrace your favourite streets.

DAY 02

Culture and a long lunch

Give the morning to the cultural spaces you have chosen. Round off the afternoon with an unhurried meal and a walk.

Another way to get to know a place

A getaway you can taste.

You don't need a list of twenty restaurants. You need to know what to look for, book a table if you want one, and give it time.

01

Torta del Casar

An Extremaduran product with its own identity. Ask how it is served, and take the chance to learn where it comes from, rather than simply ordering a cheese board.

02

Migas and seasonal cooking

Migas are part of the local cuisine. Compare the day's menu and choose a lunch that leaves time for a sobremesa (a lingering time at the table).

03

A getaway you eat, too

Combine the monumental walk with a booked lunch. Ask about regional produce and don't build the whole day around adding up monuments.

Same destination. Different trip.

Cáceres, with whoever you like.

As a couple

Repeat part of the route as evening falls and book a dinner with no transfer afterwards. Staying close by simplifies the plan.

On a tight budget

Walking the city already fills a good part of the trip. Choose indoor visits by interest and check their current conditions.

With children

Break the route into short stretches between squares. Look for shade and adjust your timings if it's hot; you don't need to go inside every building.

Choose your base well

The area around Plaza Mayor lets you explore the city on foot. Check access with luggage and whether your accommodation has a lift if you need one.

Three ways to choose your base

Around Plaza Mayor

To get your bearings easily and walk back after dinner. Check the room and the noise in the area if resting is a priority.

Historic enclosure

To stay inside the walk itself. Confirm access restrictions, the paving and how to get in with luggage.

Outside the monumental centre

It can make parking and arrival easier. Look at the walk to the centre before deciding on price alone.

Where to stay in Cáceres

On hot days, do your walking first thing and last thing, and keep the interiors for midday.

Good plans can change too

If the weather turns.

Pick one or two interiors that have confirmed they are open and link them with an unhurried lunch. The cobbles can be slippery: cut back the walking and leave the general views for another part of the day.

Two things that save you from a bad plan.

Walking everything at midday in summer

Move the outdoor walk to first and last thing. Use the middle of the day to rest, eat or visit an interior that is open.

Promising yourself every indoor visit

Opening hours and works change. Confirm the spaces that matter most to you and leave alternatives rather than a fixed agenda.
